Concept Map-Measurement



Measurement


I.       length


•2.MD.2. Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
There are two systems used to measure length: The Metric System and The US System.
For the metric system, you measure length in meters. Small units of of lengths are called millimeters. When you have ten millimeters you can call then a centimeter. 100 centimeters would be called a meter. 1000 meters would be called a kilometer. Therefore, 1 centimeter=10 millimeters
1 meter=100 centimeters
1 kilometer=1000 meters
For the US System, length can be measure four ways. The small unit of measurement is inches. Twelve inches equals one foot. Three feet equals one yard. 1,760 yards equals one mile. Although US system is not based on tens, it is still easy to see that each system has different units to represent smaller lengths to the longest lengths.

The two units to measure weight are pounds and ounces. Ounces are used to weigh smaller units, such as spices. Pounds are used to weigh heavier units, such as fruit. One pound=16 ounces

Two ways to measure temperature: Fahrenheit and Celsius.
Fahrenheit: Freezing Point: 32 degrees Fahrenheit
Boiling Point: 212 degrees Fahrenheit

Liters represent large amounts of fluid. For example, a big bottle of coke is 2 liters of coke.
Fluid ounces are used to represent smaller amounts of fluid. For example, a can of coke is 20  fluid ounces.

•2.MD.7. Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.
There are two types of clock, Analog and Digital clocks. Analog clocks are the bigger clocks that shows the time by hands on the clock. Digital clocks show the time digitally. Time is measured in a.m. and p.m. A.m. means ante meridian or before noon. Therefore when you see a.m. after a time you know it is morning. P.m. stands for post meridian or after noon. Therefore when you see p.m. after a time you know it is after noon. Time is measured in units called seconds, minutes, and hours. Seconds are the smallest unit of time. Next is minutes, 60 seconds are equal to one minute. Next is hours, 60 minutes are equal to one hour.

Podcast

The first podcast I listened to was a podcast published by the Mississippi Department of Education. This podcast was a video dramatization titled A Critical Incident: What to do in the first 20 minutes. The podcast dramatized a shooter entering a school and the first steps that should be taken in a critical incident like that.
The second podcast I listened to was also a podcast published by the Mississippi Department of Education. This podcast was also a video of a lady name Dr. Lynn House, the Deputy Superintendent for the Mississippi Department of Education. In this video podcast she discusses the pathway to success for students when taking the test required by common core standards. She uses three "R's" to describe what students need in order to excel on these test. They are: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships.
I had never watched a podcast until this assignment. I found that they caught my attention more than reading articles do. An article can sometimes be boring and I have to force myself to read it. With the podcast, I found them more interesting and easier to understand.

“How Shutterfly and Other Social Sites Leave Your Kids Vulnerable to Hackers”
Shutterfly is a social media site used to upload photos of kids, phone numbers, addresses, gender, school, and even sport jersey numbers. Although this site is very useful for coaches or other activities, the information uploaded to Shutterfly might not stay on Shutterfly. Many individuals have trusted Shutterfly because of their policy of using Secure Socket Layer. Although Shutterfly claims this, Mother Jones found out the Shutterfly was aware that their website had not been using this security feature due to the amount of cost. A man decided to do his own experiment and created fake accounts on different sites including Shutterfly. He then downloading a hacking software and was able to hack the information he had uploaded. After making his experiment public, Shutterfly says they are addressing the problem and suggests that no one posts private information to Shutterfly.

I found this information very weird and disturbing. First of all, why would a hacker even care to get information on kids regarding their age or gender. Although this is weird, there are people who live in this world who have nothing better to do than still people’s information. I think it is very wrong for Shutterfly to say they use SSL but they really don’t due to the cost. It scares me to think of the sites I have trusted that might not use SSL as well due to cost. Even though technology can be really useful at times, it can also be very dangerous.

“With Tech Taking Over in Schools, Worries Rise”
This article is about how lawmakers in California passed a law restricting certain types of technology from selling or disclosing information they receive from students. As teachers throughout California schools were starting to use technology more and more, parents were getting nervous about personal information about their students being sold or given to second hand sources. James P. Steyer, chief of executive of Common Sense Media, makes an excellent point when he states, “You can’t have an education technology revolution without strong privacy protections for students.” California’s lawmakers stand for this topic is making other parents aware throughout other states.

I thought this article was pretty interesting, because I have never considered the affects that technology can have on students’ personal information. I commend California legislatures for stepping up and making sure their students’ information is safe. It is important as teachers and parents to realize that even though technology in the classroom seems to enhance students’ learning, we need to make sure the information we present this technology with is not given to second hand sources.
