Concept Map-Measurement
•2.MD.2. Measure the length of an object twice,
using length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how
the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
There are two systems used to measure length: The Metric System and The US
System.
For the metric system, you measure length in meters. Small units of of lengths
are called millimeters. When you have ten millimeters you can call then a
centimeter. 100 centimeters would be called a meter. 1000 meters would be
called a kilometer. Therefore, 1 centimeter=10 millimeters
1 meter=100 centimeters
1 kilometer=1000 meters
For the US System, length can be measure four ways. The small unit of
measurement is inches. Twelve inches equals one foot. Three feet equals one
yard. 1,760 yards equals one mile. Although US system is not based on tens, it
is still easy to see that each system has different units to represent smaller
lengths to the longest lengths.

sec.
The two units to measure weight are pounds and ounces. Ounces are used to weigh
smaller units, such as spices. Pounds are used to weigh heavier units, such as
fruit. One pound=16 ounces

Two ways to measure temperature: Fahrenheit and
Celsius.
Fahrenheit: Freezing Point: 32 degrees Fahrenheit
Boiling Point: 212 degrees Fahrenheit
Celsius: Freezing Point: 0 degrees Celsius

•5.MD.3. Recognize volume as an attribute of solid
figures and understand concepts of volume measurement.
Liters represent large amounts of fluid. For example, a big bottle of coke is 2
liters of coke.
Fluid ounces are used to represent smaller amounts of fluid. For example, a can
of coke is 20 fluid ounces.

•2.MD.7. Tell and write time from analog and digital
clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.
There are two types of clock, Analog and Digital clocks. Analog clocks are the
bigger clocks that shows the time by hands on the clock. Digital clocks show
the time digitally. Time is measured in a.m. and p.m. A.m. means ante meridian
or before noon. Therefore when you see a.m. after a time you know it is
morning. P.m. stands for post meridian or after noon. Therefore when you see
p.m. after a time you know it is after noon. Time is measured in units called
seconds, minutes, and hours. Seconds are the smallest unit of time. Next is
minutes, 60 seconds are equal to one minute. Next is hours, 60 minutes are
equal to one hour.

ReplyDeleteI would not have thought to use measurement for my concept map but I really like yours. It is very organized and not cluttered but yet you could do a lot with this lesson!

ReplyDeleteVisually your concept map is very interesting to look at. I think the topic of the types of measurements is interesting and children really need to know that.
ReplyDeleteThe map is cute and uses colors well to categorize different parts of the lesson. I like the diversity of topics that fit into this lesson. It looks like it could even be spread over a unit with different parts of the map taught each day.

ReplyDeleteI think this is a creative way to teach measurement and time to children. When I was a child, I had a hard time understanding this. Her illustrations were cute and original. However, Kelsey's voice is small and hard to hear.
